The Climate Action community did it again!
On Saturday, May 16, a group of 15 enthusiastic colleagues joined forces at a park in Mexico City to participate in the annual Plastianguis event.
The great result of this journey was the culmination of a special internal campaign where the entire Leschaco family contributed.
Thanks to the commitment of everyone, the team managed to collect a total of 80 kilograms of plastic, reaffirming the corporate responsibility toward environmental care and waste reduction.
Months of Commitment in the Office: How Did the Dynamic Work?
This achievement was not built in a single day. Over several months, the Climate Action community launched an open invitation to all Leschaco employees to separate plastic waste at home and bring it at the offices.
Week after week, the response of the collaborators grew, turning the office into an ecological meeting point. This dynamic not only allowed the team to accumulate the material, but it also helped to generate a daily habit of separation and to make the teams aware of the amount of plastic generated individually.
What is ANIQ and Plastianguis
The Asociacion Nacional de la Industria Quimica (ANIQ) is the organization that represents the chemical sector in Mexico and promotes the sustainable development of the industry.
The Plastianguis program is an event designed to educate society about the correct separation of plastic waste, demonstrating that these materials are not rubbish, but valuable resources that can be reincorporated into the productive chain.
Driving the Circular Economy
The participation in Plastianguis is a perfect example of how to put the Circular Economy into practice. In contrast to the traditional model of "take, make, and dispose," the circular economy seeks to close the life cycle of materials.
By separating, collecting at the office, and finally delivering these 80 kilograms of plastic, the team ensured that the materials will be recycled correctly to become new products, preventing them from polluting the ecosystems and reducing the need to extract new raw materials.
From Recycling to Social Benefit
The plastic accumulated during these months was translated into 677 Plastipesos, an ecological currency exchanged directly for essential products of the basic food basket. To ensure that this effort had a double impact, all these supplies will be delivered to the Red de Banco de Alimentos (Food Bank Network), supporting families that need it directly.
Here is the balance of the food and cleaning items rescued thanks to the recycling of the entire team:
Rice: 7 kilograms
Beans: 12 kilograms
Soup pasta: 4.2 kilograms
Cooking oil: 2.5 liters
Tuna: 10 packets
Salt: 4 kilograms
Hygiene and cleaning products: 3 pieces of vegetable disinfectant, 2 bars of Zote soap, 3 packets of Roma soap, and 16 rolls of toilet paper.
A Special Thank You to the Champions!
None of this would have been possible without the leadership, energy, and excellent organization of Nancy Cervantes and Ivan Velazquez. As leaders of the Climate Action community, they coordinated the collection campaign at the office and the logistics to take the plastic to the park.
Thank you very much for inspiring the team to be agents of change and to promote sustainability in the daily routine!
The community also extends a warm thank you to all Leschaco collaborators who brought plastic to the office during these months and to the 15 volunteers who supported the final delivery.
Every kilogram counted to make a difference!
