SANTIAGO, CHILE
Leschaco has launched a major global awareness campaign focused on food loss and waste, kicking off with a powerful sensitization session in Chile today, November 24th, featuring the local non-profit partner, Red de Alimentos. This internal event marks the beginning of a broader commitment to address food insecurity and environmental impact across the globe.
Understanding the Global Problem: Loss and Waste
The session, titled "Alimenta Con Propósito (Nourish with Purpose)," provided Leschaco employees with crucial data highlighting the scale of the food waste crisis:
Global Context: Annually, over 1.050 million tons of food are discarded, with 60% coming directly from households (PNUMA 2024).
Latin America: On average, each person in Latin America wastes 88 kg of food per year.
Triple Impact: The core message from Red de Alimentos, a member of the Global Food Banking Network, emphasized their mission to generate a social, economic, and environmental triple impact by connecting those who have food with those who need it, preventing waste.
From Awareness to Action: A Global Call
This foundational talk in Chile is the first of several planned sessions across the Leschaco network, demonstrating a commitment that aligns with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
Upcoming Awareness Sessions:
Mexico: Wednesday, November 26th
Peru: Wednesday, December 11th
The global goal is to transition from awareness to tangible action, providing support for vulnerable communities, especially during the upcoming holiday season.
Mobilizing for the Holidays: Employee & Partner Donations
Leschaco is not only educating its teams but also actively promoting food donation drives across its locations. The company is encouraging both corporate and employee contributions of non-perishable goods, such as:
Rice
Pasta
Canned Tuna
Tomato Sauce
Oil
Sugar
Furthermore, Leschaco is leveraging its influence in the logistics supply chain by inviting key suppliers and partners to join this initiative. By collaborating, Leschaco aims to maximize the amount of food donated in December, ensuring thousands of people have access to necessary sustenance during the holidays.
"Let's keep working together for those who need it most..."
