The Beehive Project: A Tale of Biodiversity, Inspiration, and Employee Engagement

Leschaco CSR

In April 2023, a buzz of excitement filled the air as the beehive project took flight in the backyard of our headquarters. This endeavour, driven by a deep love for nature aimed to protect biodiversity and raise awareness about the vital role of bees in our ecosystem. To learn more about this remarkable initiative, we sat down with our colleague Sonja Koppe, the driving force behind the project.

As we delved into the conversation, Sonja revealed a startling fact that highlights the critical importance of bees: "Did you know that if bees were to become extinct, the world would survive for only three months?" This staggering revelation set the stage for a compelling tale of resilience and determination.

The beehive project at Leschaco serves as a "multiplicator" for environmental protection aiming to nurture and protect wild bees while spreading a message of conservation and sustainability.

When asked about the origins of this captivating project, Sonja recounted her personal journey into the world of beekeeping. "I have a garden in Bremen, and I've always had a deep connection with nature," she said. It was during this time that a neighbouring beekeeper approached her for temporary housing for his bees, she agreed out of curiosity. However, when the bees were eventually moved, she realized how much she missed their presence. This experience inspired her to embark on her own beekeeping adventure.

After completing a course on beekeeping and acquiring her first bees, Sonja has been nurturing them for six years. She proudly refers to herself as a "breeder" of queens, emphasizing the continuous cycle and the heartfelt dedication required to be successful in this endeavour. Despite her husband's allergy to bees, he remains a staunch supporter. Sonja's dedication goes beyond her personal life, as she generously shares the honey produced by her bees with friends and neighbours. The appreciation she receives from them is a heart-warming reward for her efforts.

Despite initial scepticism, the beehive project at Leschaco became a reality thanks to the support of our CEO, Mr. Constantin Conrad. In April 2023, amidst rainy and windy weather, the beehive behind the office became a reality. The housekeepers and Sonja's husband joined forces to construct the hive, complete with a fence, soil, and vibrant flowers. Overjoyed, Sonja and her husband transported the bees to their new home. Astonishingly, the bees adjusted remarkably well to their new environment, finding abundant sources of food within the radius of their hive. The bees' foraging journeys led them to discover hawthorn flowers, acacia, blackberries, and wild roses. Sonja witnessed a glimmer of hope, reassured that her bees would thrive despite the initial doubts.

Inside the hive, a honey room and a separate area for baby bees are carefully arranged. The bee queen is shielded from the honey by a lattice, ensuring the honey remains pure.  Sonja plans to package the honey in small jars, offering her colleagues a taste of this natural delight. She is dedicated to maintaining the integrity and uniqueness of the honey, refusing to mix it with other ingredients. "I handle the bees with utmost care, ensuring their well-being, and I only harvest a small portion of their honey. Consequently, we anticipate a modest yield that we can share," Sonja kindly emphasized.

Sonja describes the beekeeping journey as a "success story’’ and the importance of bees cannot be overstated. Not only do they pollinate plants and contribute to biodiversity, but they are also a crucial part of the delicate balance that sustains life on our planet.

The beehive project at Leschaco stands as a shining example of environmental stewardship, inspiration, and employee engagement, reminding us of the profound impact each individual can make in preserving our planet's beauty and diversity.
